All drugs before being marketed, are subjected to clinical trials. In these trials subjects (patients ) are divided in to two groups. One group is given actual medicine and the other group is given a dummy.
But it is kept secret from both the groups .
Finally the response from the patients is analysed and then the efficacy of the particular medicine is assessed .
In these trials interesting thing to note is many patients who have received a dummy medicine also show a positive response and feel good .
The medicine is approved only if the number of patients who received the actual medicine and who have become better far exceeds the number of patients who have become better with dummy medicine .
In conclusion placebo effect is the positive effect shown in a person who takes medicine thinking that he will be alright .
Placebo effect is really a wonderful phenomenon and this is abused by so many pharmaceutical companies claiming so many beneficial effects by their products .Most of these work by placebo effect
